The results of SCI Australia’s survey of housing needs show that this issue is an everpresent concern for people with spinal cord injuries and similar disabilities.
Among the findings are:
People with disabilities live in the full range of accommodation: privately owned, rented, public housing and community housing.
85% of respondents felt that their current housing meets their needs. Of the 15% whose housing does not meet their needs the major concerns are access to community, inappropriate internal fittings/equipment and lack of privacy or personal space.
58% felt that their housing needs will change as they age. This is primarily due to increasing health needs, combined with reduced capacity of family support. 70% have not planned for those changes.
93% felt that SCI Australia has a role to play in advocating for the availability and provision of accommodation to people with disabilities.
