RollAwayz

RollawayzRollAwayz opens in Google Earth to show the location of wheelchair accessible travel and tourism accommodation in hotels, resorts, motels, backpacker hostels and bed and breakfasts across Australia.

With Google Earth’s tools users can see exactly where it is and what’s nearby.

There are over 1300 properties on the map, and more are being added as they are identified.

Each location on this map has been reported as having at least one room that is wheelchair accessible. That means that there are no steps to get to and into the room, and that its bathroom has a stepless shower stall and a hand-held shower.

To ensure that your holiday and business travel won't be spoilt by an inaccessible room it is important that you check for yourself before booking. Speak to someone who has been in the room and is familiar with its access features. What suits one person might not be right for another so it’s essential to ask detailed questions.

In this map some properties that are noted to have self-contained accommodation have a minimum of a kitchenette. They may not have full kitchens or laundries.

More locations and information are being added all the time, so come back for a fresh copy when you are planning your next Australian roll away.

For more information about the properties on the map contact SCInfo (61 2 9661 8855; information@scia.org.au).

Google Earth must be installed on your computer before RollAwayz can be used.

You can download Google Earth @ www.earth.google.com

Do you know of other accessible properties or have feedback on the ones in RollAwayz? Please email the details to information@scia.org.au.

Visiting Sydney? Use RollAwayz together with the Sydney accessible transport map and you will see where the nearest accessible train, monorail and tram station, anf ferry wharf is.

You will see what is available with RollAwayz or contact SCInfo (02 9661 8855 information@scia.org.au) and we can provide a list.

I'm looking for wheelchair accessible motels from Sunshine Coast (QLD) to Cairns. Any suggestions as to where to look? AAA rated motels are beginning include a wheelchair logo in their advertising but I have often found that the facilities are far from wheelchair friendly. My husband is the "wheelie" and I am his carer/driver/holiday organiser.

Craig Rosenkrantz writes about his visit to Kakadu including Yellow Waters @ http://craigros.com/pages/travel/australia/nt/ntkakadu.html. His other NT pages - http://craigros.com/pages/travel/australia/nt/nt.html. For transport to Kakadu you will need to hire your own vehicle as there may not be a coach tour that has a hoist. You can fly from Alice to Uluru.

I am seeking information on accessible tours in the Northern Territory. Interested in the Yellow Water in Kakadu and want to get from Darwin to Kakadu. Also want to get from Alice Springs to Ayres Rock. Has anyone done it and if so, how did you travel? Any information appreciated.

Thank you so much for this!

We have considered that but some of the locations are difficult to pinpoint as they don't have precise street addresses. We will try to do it in future. Meanwhile, have you looked at the National Toilet Map www.toiletmap.gov.au ? Problem will be that some will be locked and not with the MLAK.

I was wondering if anybody has the smarts to put the MLAK toilet sites on a map. I would make planning a journey easier than looking up a alphabetical index.

We do try to get it mentioned and linked on other websites. We hope that word will spread as more people use it.

Great idea, I have not used it yet but last November I was looking for this kind of information, but never came across this till now, and only by chance! How can you make this information easier to find for those that need it?

Thanks TNC and sorry for your bad experience. I have removed those 2 from the map. Reminds us how important it is to make our own inquiries about properties every time.

My wife and I just holidayed North Coast NSW. We stayed at the UKI Guest House. We loved it. Purpose built, restored for folk in wheelchairs or those requiring assistance. The hosts are delightful the food is simple but delicious. They can supply whatever you need. Great showers, toilets with non slip floor. Sleeps ten, three or four bathrooms, 5 double bedrooms. Very clean.Tried The Formula near Brisbane Airport. Had to sleep in my chair, unable to enter bathroom.Chermside Green Motel QLD. Small step to door. Had to remove arm rests from wheelchair to enter the room. Unable to manoeuvre my chair into the bathroom.

Take a look at the left hand side of the GE screen, at the Paces tab. When you open the file, it goes in the Temporary Places folder. When you close GE it asks whether you want to save. If you say yes it goes into My Places and will stay there, and be there next time you use GE. If you have done that, you should delete it when you get an update otherwise it will show twice.

I just downloaded an update. Now when I look at a place its icon is doubled. What's happened?

There aren't any places in NSW that we know of that do adventure holidays on-site. In Victoria Able Management Group runs a camp that offers off-road buggies fitted with hand controls, fishing, handcycling, four-wheel driving and kayaking, and can organise paragliding, ultralight flying etc. See www.ablemanagement.com.au.
